SIERRA LEONE
Arcadia Reach CIC are building a well drilling rig for rural Sierra Leone where safe water is dangerously scarce. Arcadia Reach CIC are building a well drilling rig for rural Sierra Leone where safe water is dangerously scarce.
In collaboration with individual communities and local charity Rory’s Well, the new water sources will help create a cycle of sustainable agriculture broken by the civil war, boosting economic prospects as well as saving lives.
In Sierra Leone, life expectancy is 39 years for men and 42 for women. These premature deaths are due to limited access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and hygiene and food insecurity. Child mortality rates remain in the top 10 globally.
The new technology we want to build can put in wells at 30 times the rate of drilling rigs currently in local use. The well drilling rig will be fitted to a 4×4 1974 Mercedes truck to reach villages where there are no roads.
Please support our crowd funder to help fund this vital, life giving mission!
ENGINEERING
We will build a rotary impact drilling rig that can reach aquifers at a depth of 100 metres at a rate of 1 borehole per day. Each will provide year round water for 500 people. The drilling rig will reach remote rural communities with poor access and dirt roads on a rugged 4×4 truck.
RORY’S WELL
Our partner Rory’s Well has extensive hands on experience of delivering clean safe water to thousands of people in rural communities in Sierra Leone. They are trusted, integrated with local communities and work collaboratively to ensure local ownership.
THE TRUCK
Arcadia has a long history of repurposing industrial and military hardware for positive change, from scanning units and jet engines into spiders, and dock yard cranes into whole new worlds. Now we are transforming a 1974 Mercedes riot control vehicle into an all terrain mobile well drilling unit. Read more about The Truck.
